SAHOTA

Most Sahotas are Jat orginally. It was during the Akbar empire that some Jat Sahotas became Tarkhan. Akbar wanted strong men to make weapons for him. He took Jat men to Lahore (to do Lohari work). Lohar type work. Lahore as the name suggests was the capital where such weapons were made. Hence these people adopted the profession. When weapons were no longer in demand these people started to do capentry work as it required the same ability and craftmanship. Spme Jats went back to being Jats , others preferred to remain as Tarkhan.

All Sahotas are in fact Jat. Any Sahota who is a Tarkhan has adopted the profession through preference. As the Akbar emperor existed for so long. It went through generations. Furthermore these Jats did not have any land to go back to. Though Akbar had given so much land in and around Hoshiarpur (near the fort). Hence the high population of Sahota Jats there. The Sahotas had also forcifully taken land in areas near Namashare supported by Akbar. They have been known to be called Akbari Jats. Some Jats stress over mix marrying Tarkhans but some Tarkhans are in fact from the Jat caste originally (i.e also Virk and Gill).
